Many people expand and finish their basement to create more living space. It’s a great idea to take an unfinished basement and create a family room. If the basement has a tendency to get damp, a dehumidifier may need to be installed. There are many variations on a basement family room. It can be a television and media room for the family or a kid’s playroom. Most prefer a traditional family room with sofas and seating areas, maybe a large screen television and, in some cases, a wet bar.
Having a place to relax with friends is the main attraction for a basement bar. It’s the type of room that a guy can decorate to his own liking, assuming that the wife is in charge of decorating the rest of the house. Having a bar built by a professional is not cheap. The materials and labor can be expensive, especially for a wet bar which also includes plumbing work in addition to the electrical work. Then, depending on the level of luxury you want, the materials and fixtures can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Once the bar is built and finished, you need to start buying the necessary accessories. Things like barstools, lighting, bottles of your favorite liquor and glassware. If you want to get really fancy you can install one of those Avanti wine coolers under the counter. This appliance will keep your wine collection at the perfect temperature. Seating, like anything else, comes in all shapes and sizes and price ranges. You can opt for standard wooden barstools which are adequate, but by no means fancy or particularly comfortable to sit and relax on. Or you can go for a more expensive, luxury item with leather seating area and a highback, swivel seat. No matter which you choose you’ll need to multiply the price by six stools. Same thing for the glassware, go for the fancy crystal tumblers and decanters and the price will be significantly higher than it would be for glassware sets from Target.
If you decide on a more toned down approach stick with basic seating and glassware. Avoid cheap, tacky stuff which will detract from your new space. Instead of a large wine refrigerator, buy a countertop wine cooler that holds 12 bottles. Besides it will nicely display your wine collection. Also, don’t add a lot of knick knacks on shelves behind the bar. This tends to look cluttered and is a mood killer. Use the shelves to prominently display your fine liquors and maybe a few classy family heirlooms, especially if they lend themselves to a particular theme that you are trying to go for. Remember this is a place for you to relax and entertain friends and family.
